Our Curriculum Implementation

We follow the National Curriculum. In Reception, children are taught the development skills identified in the Early Years Curriculum - life skills that will support their learning and integration into school life. For details, please refer to the 'Admissions' section of this website where you can access a tab about our Reception Class. 

In Years One to Six, we teach the three core National Curriculum subjects: English, Maths and Science. As a Church of England School, RE is another key subject area in our curriculum. We also teach Computing, PE, History, Geography, Art, Design & Technology, Music, French, PSHE (Physical, Social and Health Education). Spiritual, moral, social and cultural education (SMSC) is embedded throughout the curriculum as well as through discrete teaching each seasonal term.

As part of our English curriculum, we teach reading (phonics, word recognition and comprehension), writing (spelling, handwriting, punctuation, grammar, vocabulary and the composition of a range of text types) and spoken language (including drama, debate, discussion, presentation and recitation). We teach reading through a systematic programme of phonics; we also teach children how to read irregular or 'tricky' words. Rather than use one reading scheme, we use a range of schemes that are colour banded according to reading levels. Children practise their reading skills every day - both at school and at home. They read a range of authors and story types as well as non-fiction texts. We share with our children a love for books and for reading so that they can develop and grow as both enthusiastic readers and writers. We have a set of recommended reading books that we use in each classroom and we encourage children to read them during the school year.

Our maths curriculum includes units of work based on number (including place value, fractions, decimals and percentages), calculations, measures, statistics (including graphs and charts) and problem solving. We teach children to develop secure mental and written maths skills.

We believe that these help to develop well-rounded individuals and nurture in our pupils a love of learning and life. As part of the curriculum, we offer day trips, residential trips, competitions (within school as well as against other schools) and educational visits. We invite experts into school to inspire the children and open their eyes to new opportunities.

All children learn to play an instrument during their time with us. All children take part in our two annual productions (our nativity and our end of year production) as well as our annual music concert and village Christmas singalong. We hold sports tournaments and an annual Sports Day.

We organise and participate in collaborative activities with other schools. These activities will vary but can include events such as joint sports tournaments, music concerts, language festivals, drama days and a Forest Schools Day.

We offer opportunities for able and gifted pupils. These include sports coaching days, instrumental lessons (currently violin and guitar), literacy activities and maths cluster days. We also employ a part time teacher who (as part of her role) works with able children as part of enrichment group lessons. In addition, children with special needs have specific provision to support their needs. This is largely provided through high quality, differentiated class teaching. However, where further support is needed, this is provided through a targeted programme and additional support. For further details, please refer to the SEND section of this website.

We celebrate the Christian festivals in liaison with Ogbourne St George Church. We actively link with the church in order to celebrate together both as part of church services as well as school worships.

Our Curriculum Intent

Underpinning all our work are our core values:

For 2022-23 our pedagogic approach to the Curriculum here at Ogbourne here will remain the same. Perhaps more so than ever before, our curriculum intent is that we will create capable, confident, independent learners who have the resilience and self-belief to change the world for the better.


As always, our Curriculum will be broad and balanced, covering a wide range of subjects – from Phonics to Fencing, from Literacy to Latin, and from Golf to Global Citizenship; it will still be studied by all pupils, enabling everyone to enjoy their learning. Above all, our Curriculum will continue to provide pupils with the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. 

However, in addition we continue to seek for our 2022-23 Curriculum to provide our pupils with an exciting, thematic, knowledge-rich learning experience. One which is coherently planned across all phases and stages; one which is sequenced towards cumulatively sufficient knowledge and skills for future learning and employment. Yet one which, at times, is co-constructed with pupils, allowing us to shape our content not only to meet their needs but to match their interests and passions.

Our curriculum aims to foster a community of inquiry, wherein our pupils welcome the diversity of each other’s initial views and are empowered to take more responsibility for their learning. In essence, each class will be studying the same topic but each from a different angle. This will allow us to create a range of collaborative learning opportunities, to share knowledge, to share ideas, to share resources, and to share skills. And at the end of each term it will allow us to celebrate, explore and share the pupils’ learning in far more unified manner. Each term’s topic will be underpinned by a key question, one which allows pupils to unify their thinking and synthesise their learning. We are learning community and now is the time for us to bring this learning together.

Trust -wide Curriculum Intent
Our common aim is to teach our children to become excited, engaged learners, able to achieve excellence. All our academies provide our children with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed for all our learners to be successful and able to realise their dreams. Within this framework, through a process of support and collaboration, each academy has been empowered to develop its own curriculum.

As a multi-academy hub-based trust, we believe in a seamless, all-through curriculum for all our pupils. To achieve this aim, we work together with our secondary colleagues to ensure each academy has a curriculum that will provide our pupils with the learning and values they need to become well-balanced, caring and responsive learners, young people who have the resilience and self-belief to make a difference.

Our Curriculum Impact

Assessment informs our teaching on a daily basis. In September 2014, a new National Curriculum was introduced in schools. This curriculum does use levels. Therefore, in order to assess our children, we have decided to use the following statements: Emerging, Developing, Expected, Exceeding and Excelling. These will relate to the achievements of each child within the year group. These statements (and their associate number codes) are used to track the children's progress throughout the school and keep parents informed about their child's achievements and areas for development.
