Maths Curriculum Intent - 2022-23

The intent of the Ogbourne CofE Primary Maths Curriculum is to provide a mastery curriculum, which is accessible to all. We want our pupils to have a deep, secure and sustainable understanding of maths. We ensure that all pupils have many opportunities to solve problems by applying their mathematical understanding to a variety of problems in both real-life scenarios and unfamiliar contexts. We intend for our pupils to be able to reason mathematically, to describe, justify, prove and convince. We want our pupils to know that mathematics is essential to everyday life. We want our pupils to realise that mathematics has been developed over centuries providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. We want our pupils to have a sense of enjoyment and curiosity and an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics.

The school embraces the aims of the National Curriculum and we deliver lessons that are creative and engaging. We foster positive attitudes and want all children to experience success in mathematics.

Maths Curriculum Implementation - 2022-23

At Ogbourne St George Primary School our maths curriculum is shaped by our intent.

To ensure consistent coverage and that skills and knowledge are built on year by year the school follows the ‘Can Do Scheme’ of learning. The use of small manageable steps, a clear progressive set of learning objectives and a mastery approach enables children to explore and demonstrate mathematical ideas and deepen their understanding. Using the ‘Do It’, ‘Secure It’ and ‘Deepen It’ structure of lessons children reason and prove their understanding at a deeper level. Physical manipulatives are used throughout the school and alongside numbers and symbols, the use of pictures is encouraged to prove and visualise abstract ideas.

The mathematics timetable at Ogbourne School prioritises additional curriculum time beyond the mathematics lesson. This additional time is used to teach mental calculation strategies, support deliberate practice, consolidate concepts and provide immediate intervention for identified difficulties and misconceptions. Same day, weekly formative and periodic summative assessment enables gaps in pupils’ mathematical knowledge to be addressed.

The school has bought into Times Tables Rockstars and all pupils from Reception through to Year 6 are actively encouraged to engage with the Times Tables and Numbots programmes.

Maths Curriculum Impact

With a positive ‘Can Do’ attitude we believe all children can achieve in mathematics and develop a sense of mathematical curiosity and enjoyment.

At each stage, all children develop a secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts with sustainable foundations ready to be built on in the next stage.

By the end of KS2 the aim is that all children are fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics with a conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. Children should have the skills to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of situations with increasing sophistication, including unfamiliar contexts and real-life scenarios. Children will be able to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language.

or subtract hate, but it gives us hope that every problem has a solution."
