Our Curriculum: Intent, Implementation and Impact

Our Curriculum Intent

Our Curriculum Intent

Underpinning all our work are our core values:
Love, Friendship, Integrity, Respect, Effort and Hope.

Our curriculum is designed with three goals in mind:

  • To provide a carefully structured and knowledge-rich academic curriculum which is built around helping pupils to build their knowledge stores and understanding of key concepts in all subject areas. We build our curriculum around key substantive and disciplinary knowledge which changes pupils’ perceptions and their understanding, as well as developing their values. We will ensure that pupils develop frameworks for gaining new knowledge which is embedded and retrieved easily, so that they can progress to expert outcomes and deepen their understanding.

  • To give pupils appropriate experiences to develop as caring, thoughtful and, responsible citizens by teaching and upholding the values of the Christian faith.

  • To provide a rich ‘cultural capital’ in the knowledge of the world which prepares pupils for life in modern Britain.  Through this, we develop the breadth of pupils’ vocabulary so that they can express themselves maturely.

We follow the National Curriculum. In Reception, children are taught the development and life skills identified in the Early Years Curriculum which will support their learning and integration into school life.

All other years are taught the core National Curriculum subjects: English, Maths and Science. As a Church of England School, RE is another key subject area in our curriculum. We also teach Computing, PE, History, Geography, Art, Design & Technology, Music, French, PSHE (Physical, Social and Health Education). Spiritual, moral, social and cultural education (SMSC) is embedded throughout the curriculum as well as through discrete teaching.

Trust -wide Curriculum Intent
Our common aim is to teach our children to become excited, engaged learners, able to achieve excellence. All our academies provide our children with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed for all our learners to be successful and able to realise their dreams. Within this framework, through a process of support and collaboration, each academy has been empowered to develop its own curriculum.

As a multi-academy hub-based trust, we believe in a seamless, all-through curriculum for all our pupils. To achieve this aim, we work together with our secondary colleagues to ensure each academy has a curriculum that will provide our pupils with the learning and values they need to become well-balanced, caring and responsive learners, young people who have the resilience and self-belief to make a difference.

Our Curriculum Implementation

We follow the National Curriculum. In Reception, children are taught the development skills identified in the Early Years Curriculum - life skills that will support their learning and integration into school life.

In Years One to Six, we teach the three core National Curriculum subjects: English, Maths and Science. As a Church of England School, RE is another key subject area in our curriculum. We also teach Computing, PE, History, Geography, Art, Design & Technology, Music, French, PSHE (Physical, Social and Health Education). Spiritual, moral, social and cultural education (SMSC) is embedded throughout the curriculum as well as through discrete teaching each seasonal term.

As part of our English curriculum, we teach reading (phonics, word recognition and comprehension), writing (spelling, handwriting, punctuation, grammar, vocabulary and the composition of a range of text types) and spoken language (including drama, debate, discussion, presentation and recitation). We teach reading through a systematic programme of phonics; we also teach children how to recognise 'harder to read and spell' words.

Our maths curriculum includes units of work based on number (including place value, fractions, decimals and percentages), calculations, measures, statistics (including graphs and charts) and problem solving. We teach children to develop secure mental and written maths skills.

We believe that these help to develop well-rounded individuals and nurture in our pupils a love of learning and life. As part of the curriculum, we offer day trips, residential trips, competitions (within school as well as against other schools) and educational visits. We invite experts into school to inspire the children and open their eyes to new opportunities.

All children take part in our two annual productions (our nativity and our end of year production) as well as our annual music concert and village Christmas singalong. We hold sports tournaments and an annual Sports Day.

We organise and participate in collaborative activities with other schools. These activities will vary but can include events such as joint sports tournaments, music concerts, language festivals, STEM events and drama days.

We celebrate the Christian festivals in liaison with Ogbourne St George Church. We actively link with the church in order to celebrate together both as part of church services as well as school worships.
